Hi Vince,

I have heard different versions of answers to your question.

If people ask me for an americano I normally give them a long black where I fill the cup with hot water first and add a double shot espresso after to maintain the crema.

Some people say that the americano only has a single shot of coffee in it.

Others say that americano and long black are identical with the only difference that for an americano you make your shots first and then add the water after. In this case I still prefer to add the shots last to maintain crema.

Either way it is a black coffee stretched with water.
